Ask A Gamer: Matt Dunn
Welcome to Ask A Gamer! Each week I will be posting a series of questions and answers from gamers to show just how similar or different we all are. My aim is to highlight the positivity in the gaming community and share what we love doing most: gaming.
This week’s gamer is: Matt Dunn
Introduce yourself and your blog/social media page
Hi, I’m Matt Dunn and I am from Cumbria in the UK. I am 33, Married and have 3 Children. I work as an Administrator but my hobby is and has always been Gaming. I started my Twitter (@MattDunnGaming) in Jan 2017 as I have always lacked gamer friends in my personal life and when people asked what stuff I was into or liked I always found it hard to explain or felt judged. On Twitter I can be myself and have met so many amazing people since I started out. Not long after I started my Twitter I decided to upload my playthoughs of games I was playing onto YouTube as I wanted to get use out of that share button on my PS4 !, This started out as a sort of video log for myself to look back on but when I started getting subscribers I thought I should up my game and self taught myself to use YouTube properly by adding End Screens and making thumbnails etc. I then created my Instagram to upload game screenshots too but I end up uploading screenshots to both Twitter and Instagram as I have 2 different sets of followers on both and I wouldn’t want to leave any one out. I am really proud of how it is all turned out as I now currently stand at 2,459 Followers on Twitter, 126 Subscribers on YouTube and 142 followers on Instagram. I’m not in it for the follow count really and I still cant believe so many people are interested in what I have to share but I am so happy I have got to meet so many great people and hope to meet many more.
Where did your love for Gaming begin?
My love for gaming began on my first ever console the Sega Master System 2!
What is your earliest gaming memory?
My earliest gaming memory is coming down on Christmas morning when I was about 6 and opening up the Master System and being very excited. Once my mam and dad set it up for me that was it, I couldn’t be torn away from it.
What was the first game you remember playing?
Sonic The Hedgehog 2.
What was the first game you ever purchased with your own money?
I started my first job when I was 14 and saved up my money to buy a PSOne and got a game called In Cold Blood with it.
Which is your preferred platform? (No judgement here!)
My preferred platform is PlayStation. I have had all the PlayStation consoles over the years and still do. I have nothing against any of the others as I currently own all 3 major consoles but at the end of the day I always go back to PlayStation.
What is your all time favourite game and why?
My all time favourite game is Final Fantasy X ! I remember this game being the first game I was ever really hyped about getting. I bought all the gaming mags at the time just to read anything I could about the game and just about wore my demo disc (that I got with my PS1 version of FFVI) out. When it was finally released I went to 4 different shops and finally was able to pick it up int the last shop and it was the last copy they had ! My initial journey through the game is so memorable to me and I always think back on it with such fondness. I have since owned the game on PS3, PS Vita, PS4 and soon to be Switch as well as my original PS2 version. No other game has since gave me just the sheer joy as FFX did all those years ago (KH3 came very close) and it is why I think it will always be my favourite.
What is your favourite genre of game?
What Game(s) are you most looking forward to this year?
I am looking forward to Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles getting a re-release as I loved that back on the Gamecube and also Chocobo Mystery Dungeon Everybuddy in March as I have never played that one. Also any news on that elusive FF7 Remake would be nice. Other Than FF games I am mostly looking forward to MediEvil (If it comes this year), Devil May Cry 5, Gears 5, Crash Team Racing and hopefully whatever E3 brings in June.
Which game made you realise that video games are a powerful storytelling medium?
It has to be Final Fantasy 7. It was the first game that really made me go WOW!
What, in your opinion, is the most important aspect of a game (level design, music, story etc)?
For me it is definitely Story. Final Fantasy 7 was the first real game I played with a proper story and I loved every minute, ever since then I have always craved an amazing story in the video games I play and I think it is why I love JRPG’s so much, because in my opinion no one does it better than the Japanese.
Which game would you love a remake of?
Hmm this is a tough one as we are getting FF7 Remade eventually and have already had Crash, Spyro, Resident Evil 2 and soon MediEvil. I’m gonna have to go with FF8 and FF9, I feel that these 2 games would be perfect to be remade with the graphics we have today also Capcom seriously needs to remake Resident Evil 3.
Which game do you feel not enough people know about?
Hmm this is hard I’d maybe go with Final Fantasy 12 Revanant Wings, I never really hear it talked about much. Its a sequel to Final Fantasy 12 which was on DS and is set out like Final Fantasy Tactics. I don’t think it did very well at the time and it could be the reason no one talks about it but I didn’t think it was too bad.
What is your favourite video game movie?
If video game movies were largely good, which game would you like to see on the big screen?
A live action Devil May Cry Movie could be quite cool but how about getting the people who made that Uncharted fan film with Nathan Fillion to make the rest of the movie as that was excellent.
